P90X Tips

So your just starting or about to start P90X and looking for some quick tips to get you off on the right foot.  Great, you came to the right place.  I have been getting a ton of messages from people asking for tips and advice for P90x….this post is for you.

First let me start out by saying, congrats!   Your taking the first steps toward living a happier and healthier lifestyle.  P90x has literally changed my life and I’m committed to paying it forward and passing on the amazing benefits of this awesome program.

Tip #1 Sign up at Team Beachbody

You can sign up for free. Just click this link and you’ll get access to message boards, support tools, an online gym to track your workouts, and more. Sign-up HERE!

Tip #2 Take your “Before” Pictures

Believe me, this was my least favorite part of getting started. It’s no fun, but you’ll be seriously glad you did later. Make sure you get a shot of your whole body from the front, back, and both sides.  Wear shorts or a bathing suit. You don’t have to show it to anyone. But when you’ve finished your program, you’re going to be amazed how far you’ve come.

Tip #3 Get a Pull-Up Bar

You can get by with bands, but the Pull-up bar is so much more effective.  If you can’t do a pull-up yet, use a chair or the Pull-up Assist until you are strong enough to do them on your own.

Tip #4 Dumbbells

Most people can probably get by with 5lbs-25lbs and add more weight as you get stronger.  The bands are also an option instead of dumbbells if space or finances are an issue.

Tip #5 Plan Your Workout Space

You’re going to need someplace with a TV and DVD player and some room to move. Usually 6 feet by 6 feet is a good rule of thumb.

Tip #6 Clean Out the Fridge

You gotta dump the junk and make room for the healthy stuff.  Your diet will be a major contributor to your results, or lack of.  If you want amazing, infomercial type results, your diet must be on-point.

Tip #7 Don’t Skip Workouts

Consistency is key here.  Follow the program the way it was laid out.  It didn’t matter how tired I was, or how late I got off work….I didn’t skip workouts.   I go to school, have a full-time job,  a wife and 4 daughters, and I still MAKE time to workout.  If I can do it…so can you.

Tip #8 NO EXCUSES!!

I have heard them all.  No time, too tired, sick, had to work late, blah blah blah…. Ask yourself, how bad do you want this?  If you want something bad enough you will make it happen.

Tip #9 If you Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail

Plan your meals.  If you plan your meals and have them ready, you are less likely to stray from your diet. Like exercise, consistency in your diet will be imperative for your success.

Tip #10 Get Your Family and Friends on Board

Let everyone know you’re making this huge decision for your health. You’ll get their support, plus it’ll keep you accountable.

Tip #11 Replace One Meal(or snack) per day with Shakeology

Shakeology is the single most important source of nutrition in my diet.  If I had to choose one supplement…Shakeology hands down!!

  1. John

    Thanks for input.
Can I still do my Judo training 2 days for maintainance 45 minutes each while
    following P90X?
Can I stay on this program indefinitely?

    • Hi John,

yes you can still do your Judo training. Just make sure you are getting enough recovery time. If you feel like it’s too much, then replace the P90X cardio based workouts with Judo. Yes, you could stay on this program indefinitely. If you continue to push yourself (more weight, reps, higher intensity), then you will always be making progress. You can also modify the program schedule or follow a hybrid routine to keep your body guessing and keep the muscle confusion going.

  2. Great post! I wish I had this list when I started out. I had to do the trial and error method, but eventually found what I needed. Getting your family on board usually takes about a month…then they see the light! LOL.
